COMMENTS: Albert has a high regard for Scott. He recommends him as a technically proficient finance and tax professional with strong managerial skills.
Driving Results: Scott is a hands-on manager who becomes involved with the client. He actually is involved in the accounting records. He will make sure the clients needs are identified and met.
Responsibilities: He is a senior manager who manages the day-to-day issues with clients. That may include billing, collections, service delivery, tax issues, financial statement analysis for clients.
Strengths: His technical skills are outstanding. Albert has seen good growth over the past few years. He is very strong in real estate partnerships, natural resources and subchapter C corporations. He also has a strong loyalty to clients. He builds strong client relationships.
Improvements: Albert wants him to be ahead of the curve on all the issues with each client. He looks to Scott to uncover new areas for PPPaterson to market its services.
Team Player:
Scott is a great team player. He makes sure that all the people on his team
know their role.
Ability to
Deal with Change: The industry has brought about continual change, and the
company has responded with organizational changes. Scott has a focus on the
customer
Ability to Deal with Stress: A stressful situation occurred when they needed to get tax opinions prepared under very tight deadlines. Transactions were constantly changing and going to deadline. Monitoring was difficult and it became very intense towards the end. Scott was in control the whole way. If there is an obstacle, they would talk about it and try to work out a reasonable approach. He would then try to negotiate a favorable outcome. He is diplomatic and always has the interests of the client in mind. He was good at evaluating the business cost or benefit of a particular action against the increased tax risk. He can help the client evaluate those risks associated with the transaction.
Leadership Capabilities: Scott is a strong leader. He knows how to require accountability from his staff. He can adapt his style of leadership depending on the situation. If he has to take on a directive role he will do it. If he has to be more diplomatic he can do that too.
How would
you rank overall performance on a scale of 0-10? He is a solid
What would it take to move up one point? An awareness and actively broadening of service offerings to clients. Become more proactive in suggesting different services. This applies to all PPPaterson employees at his level.
Reason(s) for Leaving: Scott is looking for an organization where he can have more impact in a senior leadership role. He may be able to make Partner status at PPPaterson, but it will take time and patience. It is becoming more and more arduous to get to that level.

Derrick Sonard, Partner |
|
|
|
Mr. Sonard was very short and terse. The interview was started, but he really had
no time to talk with us. He said he wanted to help Scott out, but he was just
too busy.
COMMENTS: Derrick has been a Partner in Charge of the tax group for 10 years, has stepped aside, and will retire soon. He directly supervised Scott for 10 years. Scott was Senior Manager and Derrick was Partner on several client accounts. Scott has been a tremendous asset to PPPaterson.
Responsibilities: He is a senior manager who manages the day-to-day issues with clients. That may include billing, collections, service delivery, tax issues, financial statement analysis for clients.
Strengths: Scott is a very hard worker and one of the few guys at PPPaterson that work weekends or nights when needed. His technical skills are outstanding. He balances family life and work very well.
Team Player: As Scott is a former Quarterback with NFL teams; he is a natural team player. He works great with the rest of the PPPaterson team. He is on several firm-wide teams in the partnership area and S Corp area and is one of the top 10 people in our firm. He gets along very well with clients.
Reason(s)
for Leaving:
There is a personality conflict with one important individual here and Scott feels he needs a change with a new opportunity. With the current economics of the practice, there is probably no further upward mobility for Scott.
Applicant was contacted to verify application content, notified of the various checks that would be performed and to verify Reference Supervisors available for interview.
